The Mozambican currency unit is the Metical, always used in the plural form Meticais (pronounced Meti-ca-ish). Notes are available in denominations of 20Mts, 50Mts, 100Mts, 200Mts and 500Mts and coins in 0.5Mts, 1Mts, 2Mts, 5Mts and 10Mts.
In Inhambane you can find ATMs, often operated by Banco Internacional de Moçambique (BIM), all accepting Visa, but not MasterCard.
You can change US dollars cash at most banks (though not at most BIM branches) without paying commission, and South African rands are widely accepted in southern Mozambique. Traveller’s cheques can be changed only at Standard Bank. They charge a minimum of US$35 commission per transaction.
Barclays (Av. Da Independencia) two branches just up from the ferry, with an ATM on the north side of the road.
